Biography

Michael Essien made his debut as a football player for Liberty Professionals (Ghana). Indeed Essien will be noticed at the world championship under 17 (1999) that was held in New Zealand. Ghana finishes 3rd in the competition, eliminated in semi-finals on penalties by the eventual winners Brazil. Their game, physical and consistent, which caught the eyes throughout the competition, is a reflection of the qualities of Essien. In the aftermath, the young prodigy joined the first team and, at age 19, reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations 2002.

Two years earlier, he joined the Sporting Club Bastia (Summer 2000) where its natural qualities enabled him to make a reputation. The coach Frederic Antonetti, initially appreciates his versatility. Defender, right or left midfielder Essien seems to adapt quickly to every position he plays. He will finally play in the central midfield and will produce some great performance to reach the final of the Coupe de France 2002.

The following year, while many forget that Essien is not yet 21 years, he will attract proposals from a host of European. But Lyon and Paris are the most serious contenders. Essien will however choose to go with Lyon in order to play in the Champions League (for 8 million euros).

Just as with Bastia, he will adapt quickly and makes his presence feel whether it is in the French League or in the Champions League. He will win the championship in 2004 and impressed by the amount of balls raked, the number of duels won, and his ability to break down opposition attacks.

During these two years in Lyon, he will improve his techniques as well as his confidence. The year 2005 will be a blessed year for him: he was elected best player the championship which he will win for a second consecutive year.

In August 2005 he will sign for Chelsea in a deal that was worth 26 million pounds. In his first game against Arsenal, 48 hours after signing, he impressed observers and partners. He will make his full debut against West Bromwich Albion in a game that he will make his first assist.

In December 2005 he will be banned by the UEFA for a controversial tackle on Dietmar Hamman. As a result he will be suspended for the game against Barcelona (elimination of Chelsea).

In 2006 he will be voted best African Footballer of the Year as well as the BBC African Footballer of the Year as a reward for his great season with Chelsea.

In May 2007 he will be voted as Chelsea Player of the Year for his great performance with the team in blue and this will be yet another trophy for the midfielder.

In 2008 he will sign another 4 year deal with Chelsea but he will be injured while playing for Ghana. But he will recover and return back to his previous form.

Again in January 2010 he will be injured in the African Nations Cup and missed the rest of the Premier League season that year.
